Twitter for Me

About a year ago, I started a Twitter account. I tweeted a few comments and photos about the Connecticut Student Film Festival, which I was supposed to attend, but then got sick. I looked in on Twitter once in a while after that, but it didn’t seem to have much appeal for me. So, I left it alone for almost a year.
My work is designing math curricula and writing instructional materials, which I love. One day each week, I go to the office, two days a month I visit teachers and kids, and on all the other days, I work at home. This is a perfect situation in some ways – wardrobe, gas fill-ups, doctor’s appointments – but in other ways, it is not a good situation at all. I need collaborators! I need to laugh! I need someone to listen to my puns and check out my GeoGebra sketches. I need to learn new stuff!
A couple months ago, I began visiting Twitter more often. I started because I wanted to go to NCTM in Denver, but I couldn’t. Being on Twitter and following attendees gave me a chance to be a part of it. At that point, I think I had two followers (thanks Pete and Matt!). I was struck by the caliber of the conversation and the camaraderie among tweeps. Slowly, I began to comment here and there, tentatively make a few posts, and follow lots more people! Pretty soon I had 34 followers! I signed up to attend and present at Twitter Math Camp, and boom! 62 followers! I got in a debate with a well-followed tweep because he proposed combining AlgebraI and Geometry to aid acceleration and more folks followed.
Fast forward to today. I have “met” some very interesting, smart people here. Some make me laugh, some make me think, and some make me really miss being in a classroom. I am still learning the ropes, but I don’t barge into book discussions unknowingly anymore! I am very much looking forward to forming meaningful relationships with like-minded people here. Twitter… who knew?
